Children are the Future

Children see the entire world in a different way than adults. The innocence of discovery is something we all enjoyed. I often wonder, had people not interjected certain ideas into my mind at certain times, where would my childlike mind had lead me? So here's to nostalgia, to innocence, and the people that will become our future.

An Apple A Day

Living a healthy life is important, and many people take their concerns with eating right or losing weight to unhealthy extremes. This month, I'll be talking about eating habits, sharing some of my favorite recipes, and focusing on healthy choices.

Legends of Africa

One thing I've noticed during my years attending predominately white schools and having circles of friends that are more diverse, is that the major factor in racism and prejudice is ignorance. There is a lot about black culture that many non-blacks just don't know. Often this lack of awareness rears its head in the form of ignorant assumptions and awkward questions. The Legends of Africa series touches on topics that may be extremely familiar to blacks, but may not be familiar to non-blacks.

Religion & Theology

I've always been interested in Religion & Theology. As I child, I questioned everything. I wanted to know why this denomination was different from that denomination. I wanted to know how Christianity differed from Islam, and how they differed from Buddhism, etc. I found that as I studied with the faith of a believer and the open mind of scientist, the world of religion started to make more sense and I was able to form beliefs that I don't question. April 2015 is dedicated to my journey to those beliefs.

  • Malena had heard rumors of exotic sea creatures, half human and half octopus--the Cecaelia, as her grandmother had called them. They were said to be exquisitely beautiful creatures of great strength, but no one knew if they were benevolent or hostile. Malena's grandmother believed they were protectors of the sea, that their actions were always for the good of the sea creatures though not some much for fliers like herself. Malena's grandfather was convinced the Cecaelia sunk ships and were jealous of that they couldn't leave the sea. In Malena's mind Cecaelia were no more real than magic spells and fire breathing dragons; they were just a tale people spun to entertain and explain the only part of Hera they couldn't explore.

On the beach that day, however, Malena was sure the creature leaping from the waves was a Cecaelia.  The octopus half had been golden with metallic blue spots decorating each leg and the human half, a man with dark hair and a young face. Malena wanted nothing more than to jump in the water behind the creature and search for answers, but she knew better than to get her feather wet. The weight of them would send her plummeting to the bottom of the ocean. Instead she gazed out at the water hoping to see the creature again, knowing that it was unlikely it would reveal itself.

Her friends were equally amused, reassuring her that she had not lost her mind, and the four of them had settled into the beach sand intently after the shock had worn off. What if they could prove their existence? If something so obvious a fairy tale turned out to be true, what else in this world was waiting to be discovered?

    How Dreams Die

    Death loves me so passionately,
    He obstructs every sweet dream
    Unable to remove himself
His poison seeps into a thought,
The lid on a tomb of battles fought--
Dreams tucked away, high on the shelf
Still succumb to his tempting cry
Lose their power, wither and die,
As he stalks my steps, steals my wealth.

  • On land, there were people that were not like Paz and Nita--they had two legs that allowed them to walk on land, and gigantic wings covered in feathers. Paz watched them, careful to stay out of sight, and wondered if this was the enemy of the war in which Nita spoke. As the winged people took to the sky, Paz marveled at how easily they could switch environments--from land to sky, sky to land--and envied their adaptability. He and Nita were relegated to the ocean forever.

Why should these people wage war on a species that was already inferior to them? They ruled 2/3 of the planet's terrain, what need did they have for the other 1/3? But Paz knew, somehow, that greed worked in mysterious ways and it was very likely that these elegant but unusual people were out to destroy his kind.

There's only one way to find out...

Paz swam away from the rocks, making his way into open water, and when he was in clear view of the land, rose above the water like a dolphin. As the water enveloped Paz once again, he heard muffled exclamations. But the flying creatures did not look angry when Paz peered back at the shore from beneath the waves. No, they appeared to be in awe...

    Know Your Status

    Sometimes fear motivates positive change...

    Succumbing to Fear

It really started over the summer, when I got bitten by a spider--I'm allergic--and had to take antibiotics. I ended up being allergic to the medication too. From there it seemed as if one thing followed another and I couldn't quite get back to 100%. In September, I took on a task slightly bigger than I could handle and sacrificed more sleep than is healthy which only added to the stress of my body. By October, I was certain I was dying. I've never been one to get sick, let alone stay sick, and the longer my symptoms lingered, the more I worried. Between the incompetence of the nurses and doctor my insurance covers and my inability to refrain from Google searching, I found myself staring at the computer in horror. It seems that every cough, sneeze, bruise, and ache is either a symptom of cancer or HIV. Logically, my fear should have been of cancer. My chance of having HIV is like .00000000001%--I'm a virgin, I don't share needles, I don't have tattoos...--but of the two, it was the worse thing I could imagine. At least with cancer there's a shot at being cured, and if you tell someone you have it, they're likely to be comforting and sympathetic.

    Information & Realizations

It took a moment for my mind to accept that I most definitely do not have HIV, a trip to my doctor (which my insurance doesn't cover) to accept I just have allergies, and a just a bit longer for me to accept that my dad calling me a hypochondriac wasn't so far from the truth. As I eased back into sanity, I couldn't help but think of stories I've heard from friends and strangers alike about flings, one night stands, and the like. I imagine if I'd engaged in even one form of risky behavior, I would be having full out panic attacks every day until the 3-6 month window closed and I could confirm I didn't have HIV (FYI: it takes HIV about 3 months to be detectable, but in rare cases can take up to 6 months). Phobias stem from misinformation (like the idea that HIV could be passed through an insect bite--which it can't, thankfully!). Fear, however, can come from regret, guilt, and all manner of dark places in the mind. That's why it's important to be informed, as well as to heed the information given to you.

Once, while speaking with a nurse, she said "It's silly to put yourself in a bubble and repress urges when most STDs are curable, and most people with herpes only get one outbreak, if that." I remember looking at her like she had lost her mind. Not only did she exclude HIV in her little speech on "STDs never hurt anyone" but it sounded so foolish--as though no one could get through life without contracting an STD at some point. Besides, would she have said that if my "repressed urges" were to kill someone or steal someone's possessions? #NoRules #Anarchy #YOLO

A long time ago, I wrote a post called The V Word which explained why I've chosen to "stay in my bubble" until marriage. That post doesn't cover STDs, as at the time, it didn't really cross my mind. You see, when I was a teenager, my biggest deterrent from sex was the possibility of becoming pregnant: neither condoms nor birth control are 100% effective at preventing that. As an adult, pregnancy doesn't sound scary at all compared to other possibilities: of which condoms are still not 100% effective and birth control is 0% effective.

There use to be a time when a man's (or woman's) word was worth its weight in gold. It was a time when people entered into relationships with the goal of it lasting forever. But, today, we live in a hook-up culture, where people only think about right now. We live in a world where people lie to get what they want. In the early days of America, this meant they took your land. In the 60's it meant they broke your heart. Today, it means they break your heart and possibly leave you a goodbye present you can never get rid of.

    Protect Yourself: Know Your Status

I know World AIDS Day isn't until December 1, but I've learned quite a bit in the past few months and I encourage you to, as well (especially if you insist on partaking in the hook-up lifestyle). It's not my place to judge another's lifestyle choice and I don't intend to, however, it is important to know the risks of the behavior you engage in as well as the safety precautions available to you. The Sweetest Thing

    So simple,
    The words uttered
    A mutual bond
    Distance tries to shatter--
One of my friends that recently moved away told me they think of me
every day and I realized I think about them too!
    Yet unpredictably,
    My mind falls to you
    And yours to me...
    Then here are we,
    Two friends--
    Still unforgotten.
    Remembered daily;
    A thought beyond imagination
    And comforting...
    How sweet--this simple gesture
    Manifests in smiles
    As I think of you.

  • Paz was leery of Nita sleeping--it was very likely that she had a concussion--but after a well stated plea, she had convinced him to let her doze off for at least a few minutes. He watched the steady movement in her side as she breathed and wondered what would become of them. The war she spoke of seemed vaguely familiar; a hint of recognition tugged at the corners of his mind, but he couldn't quite make out the full image.

The harder Paz tried to place a finger on Nita's war, the harder it was for him to remember even the little things. Where was he from? Why was he in this particular location? The longer he thought, the less he knew. It was unsettling. For all he knew, he was on the opposing side of this war and should be killing Nita instead of helping her.

No. Don't think that. Paz told himself. One thing he could be certain of was that he was no killer. His instincts told him he was supposed to save people. He had known they needed to stop the bleeding and he had known it was possible that she might have a concussion. Perhaps he was a medic...

Regardless, he needed to figure out what was happening. Sometime in the very near future, he would have to decide if he and Nita were enemies or allies. He needed to know on what side of the war he stood. Once he was certain Nita was safe and sound asleep, he swam away.

    Circus of Words Trinet Poetry

    Trinet Poetry

The Trinet form was created by Zion. The following structure should be repeated 3 times, if centered it results in a poem that looks like three crosses. This style does not have a specified rhyme scheme and thus can be rhymed or unrhymed.

    Poem Structure:

    Line 1: 2 words
    Line 2: 2 words
    Line 3: 6 words
    Line 4: 6 words
    Line 5: 2 words
    Line 6: 2 words

    My Tips, Tricks, & Opinions

Feel free to leave your thoughts and advice in the comment section below.

    What I Like

I found this form through Shadow Poetry and thought it looked cool, so I decided to try it. I like the visual aspect of the finished poem and the structure is fairly simple to follow. Since the poem resembles crosses, I tend to choose faith or hope based themes for these. Personally, I think it would be weird to write a Trinet on getting wasted or some such topic...

    A Few Tips

Two word lines back to back can seem broken and fractured if you aren't careful. If you want more fluidity, I suggest thinking of the two word lines collectively instead of separately.

    Trouble comes
    The morning
After my sins manifest in light
Unaltered by dark shadows of night
    Worldly deeds
    Come forth.

    Trouble comes
    The aftermath
Of wrong bubbling and boiling over
Burning everything in its short path
    Like flames
    Coming forth.

    Trouble comes.
    The end
Of troubled times is the door
To perfection that existed once before--
    Peace forgotten
    Comes forth.

    Circus of Words Katauta Poetry

    Katauta Poetry

Katauta is a Japanese style of poetry that was used before 8 AD and consists of 17 or 19 syllables. These syllables are spread over 3 lines either with each line containing 5, 7, then 5 syllables or 5, 7, then 7 syllables. Two Katautas written together make up a Sedoka. A single Katauta is considered an incomplete poem.

    My Tips, Tricks, & Opinions

Feel free to leave your thoughts and advice in the comment section below.

    A Confusing Point

The Katauta is short. Using the traditional definition of a Haiku, a Katuata is approximately the same thing (having a syllable make up of 5-7-5 over three lines). The main difference, I assume, is that the Haiku is more complex than the standard 5-7-5 definition (though I'm not an expert there) and is unrhymed, while the Katuata can be rhymed. I'm still working out the difference....

    But Lookout For...

Katuatas are considered incomplete for a reason: if you want to capture a short moment in time, a Haiku is probably more acceptable. From what I've read, Katautas are meant to be part of a longer dialogue, though singularly they are good practice for the longer style.

    Sedoka Poetry

The Sedoka is a Japanese poem. Sedoka's are created by writing two Katautas and was used for dialogues or to show differing perspectives [1, 2]. Sedokas are therefore comprised of two sets of tercets. For each tercet, the syllable count is 5, 7, 7, for the first, second, and third lines respectively. It is thought that Kakinomoto Hitomaro, Japan's first great literary figure, wrote this style of poetry.

    My Tips, Tricks, & Opinions

Feel free to leave your thoughts and advice in the comment section below.

    Unique Factors

This style of poetry was designed for dialogue and multi-point-of-view exploration. If you have a dialogue or want to express multiple points of view, this is the style I would suggest.

    But Lookout For...

This is a style based on syllable count, so don't forget to check your syllables! Also, since this poem style is fairly short (6 lines total) and is commonly divided into two parts--a question/response or two points of view--the message has to be short. You aren't going to be able to fit an entire debate between pro-life and pro-choice politicians. Due to the length constraints, you'll want to simplify the arguments, capture the main point, and spotlight it using this style.
