My creative writing teacher once told me the best way to become a good writer was to read. She insisted that the more you read, the better writer you would become. I don't disagree, but I've found that inspiration comes from many great places, from the lab and science classrooms to art shows and concerts. One place I find a great deal of inspiration is in movies. Tonight, two of my favorite movies collided in my head for yet another influx of ideas!
I'm a huge fan of the Disney Fairies series, so it stands to reason I'd watch it's newest movie: The Pirate Fairy. Pirates are kind of a big deal in Disney lore; they first appear in Peter Pan and Disney revived the fun of pirates with Pirates of the Caribbean, but it's not often pirates play a huge role in fantasy or fiction anymore (or maybe I'm just missing all the good pirate movies). I believe there are pirates in Narnia and there are definitely pirate-like characters in Treasure Planet (the second movie in this collision and also a Disney film). Speaking of Treasure Planet, it's basically a futuristic version of Treasure Island. Cyborgs and flying boats with aliens and treasure. Which of course lends itself to needing pirate characters...
I'd like to see an extremely futuristic story with pirates and a touch of fantasy. Something darker than Disney and Narnia... I'm thinking of a plot deeper than just pirates plundering for gold... What do you think of pirates and pirate stories? Leave a comment below with your opinions.
